Drawing at MIAD

It's like going home. Those wood-plank drawing horses, metal easels, drawing boards, loose charcoal bits, and a general chill in the air have been embedded as the wonderful default for any drawing experience.

Throughout the years I have been to nicer venues, even treated to the occasional free hot chocolate, but the MIAD experience is the foundation of my drawing career. It is where I was first offered a path different from the "7 heads" drawing method. Paulie introduced me to gestures and we were all allowed to pursue a new direction, away from the bargue style of classic realism, to connect with the experience of marking making.

The feeling I've been here before.

It was difficult to wrap my mind around the familiarity of the drawing studios on MIAD's 3rd floor. Years later, it occurred to me that I crashed an art history field trip to the college when I was a freshman in high school. That hallway was burned into my subconscious and played as the backdrop in my dreams for years. In my mind, I've been walking those halls for decades. It is safe to say it's like home to me.
